Gas Encyclopedia

64 molecules to discover in great detail

For many years researchers, industrialists and students had to search for the information they needed on the molecules used in their plants and laboratories in various publications. This information, scattered, sparse, and sometimes inaccessible, took a long time to collect and sometimes required complex calculations. But one day, the Air Liquide Gas Encyclopedia came along and changed everything. In 2017, a new digital chapter opens, updated and integrating new features in 2022.

Gas Encyclopedia

1976

A little history

1976: Air Liquide teamed up with Elsevier to publish the first Gas Encyclopedia. A considerable amount of work was done by the Group’s Research and Development experts, who collected and selected data on topics as broad as physical properties, instructions for use, compatibility with various materials, and the uses of more than 100 molecules.
Practical and precise, this Encyclopedia rapidly became a key reference for many users, leading to updated editions in 1985 and 2002
2003

The digital era

Today, the Gaz Encyclopedia is still a highly-regarded tool for academics as well as  industrialists. Available online since 2002, it has been further improved since with additional practical tools such as the gas/liquid converter to facilitate the work of its users. These efforts have paid off, with the online Encyclopedia generating more than a million visits a year. In 2013, a Gas Encyclopedia app for tablets focusing on 64 molecules was made available, offering mobility and greater user friendliness. This version integrates a universal converter and a molecule comparison tool.
2017

A new website, renewed in 2022

Fully revamped and relaunched in 2017, then in 2022, the new Gas Encyclopedia website is still available across digital media (mobile phones, tablets, laptops). Available in French and English, this site is designed to be used by anyone, anywhere. It offers all functionalities for the 64 molecules, making this application a success, especially the comparison and conversion tools. The data are regularly updated, ensuring that the most complete and up to date information is available. And last but not least, for each molecule, the 2022 version presents phase diagrams that are dynamic and you can still download the set of datas.

Sharing knowledge

This initiative illustrates the commitment of the Air Liquide Group and its scientific community, the m-Lab (molecule lab), to the development and sharing of the scientific knowledge on Essential Small Molecules for life, matter and energy.

Initiated by R&D in 2015, the m-Lab is Air Liquide’s in-house scientific community created to facilitate open innovation with our customers and partners. Since, m-Lab organizes scientific challenges open to  innovation and research ecosystems on scientific topics to solve societal challenges.
